Things that still matters

So…Another New Year has arrived.
As usual this is that little time of reflection of the year. This time though, it’s time to look at the music,
Those thing that still matters. Songs that have followed me through the years. And for good measure, this time it’s the Ballads.
Here we go, ghosts of future passed:

I never liked Scorpions without Uli Jon Roth that much, and I really never, ever liked their ballads after he left, but this one is the excption:

And then we have the songs of Deep Purple:

What came with the Stormbringer:

Which inevitably leads us to Whitesnake:

Or the origianal version with Moody and Marsden:

And since a lot of people thinks that Whitesnake is a Poor Mans Led Zeppelin, let’s slide gently into that:

But we can notleave David Coverdale unchallenged. The song that eveybody in the Clan of Purple did:

And turning over to Dio we catch this:

And from there to a couple of covers, Dio and Malmsteen covers Aerosmith:

A now being in Sweden, let Blackmore’s Night cover Rednex:

And then some of what was the gamechanger in music style for me.
Mighty Motörhead, the guys that made Bomber, which marked the split off to another musical style for me:

And Black Sabbath backed that up:

Time for at little break with the odd ones out, the bands I never really liked, but who made great stuff:

And now over to something completely different:

Never times:

Somehow I sort of drifted into the more grandiose 🙂

But that’s another story..Probably to come..

In the meantime, another of the greatest

Guitar magick (Building the shred machine)

The aim of all guitarists seems to be the ultimate hero.

Here’s the deal .

Learn to sight-read, get a copy of The Guitar Grimoire, a thesaurus of all known scales patterns and chords, know how chords and scales relate to each other, know every note on the guitar ”cold”, concentrate, practice every hour on the hour, program your body to perform all the necessary movement without reflection, and:

Hey Presto!

A new God is born.

Easy right ?

By now you are about as interesting as a any other juggler or conjurer, so let’s move on to what comes after the basics.

Charge your music with what you are.

This is not a static condition, but (hopefully) a state of eternal change, simply because living is changing. You could be a Robert Fripp fan one day and a James Hetfield fan the next day. Remember that all guitarists have something to offer, and can seriously affect your playing if you care to listen. But the starting point is still you, so find out what you are and what you want to be, because it will spill over into the music consiencely or unconsiencely ( If you are an aggressive player you don’t want to be in a mellow laid back band, and the band don’t need you ). Once you have figured out what you want to be right now, keep repeating to yourself :

”I am that”

So how about the practical application ? The most individual traits in guitarists are not their use of different scales and chords, but much like violinist it is in Vibrato, Intonation, Pick attack, muting etc.

Listen to for instance BB King, Yngwie Malmsteen, Angus Young, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck ( some of my own vibrato favorites). They are very different in their approach and you may not like their music, but they are instantly recognizable when they play. Pick out your own gurus for the different aspects of playing.
Remember to do one thing at a time and focus entirely on this until mastered ( it is hard to be a BluegrassNeo-Classic when you’re learning) Do not get caught up in mastering ALL techniques or you will be 98 before you start playing for real. Next step:

Transcend yourself

Once you have reached what you wanted, make a new definition of what you are and want to be, and as a final step forget the definitions and start working on yourself and in your self. Meditate on your techniques one by one by just doing one thing until exhaustion and boredom sets in. Keep it up. At this point you will start coming up with new ways of doing things.

Alternatively:

Go down to the crossroads.

A little more philosophy..

The simple truths of life:

Rappers need women to look cool.
Rockers are cool, so they get women.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fact.

Loven:

The more laws and order are made prominent, the more thieves and robbers there will be

Laozi

Videnskaben:

Enough research tends to support one’s theory..
Someone important at some time

Fortsættelse følger utvivlsomt…

The pros and cons of…

Men skidt.

I’m going to fuck your life up

Ikke den værste åbning på en sang

You Better Run

Lemmy plays the Blues:

Enough of the slower stuff. Now back to the other reality:

We shoot power to your heart, a mighty thunderbolt
We charge all batteries, we save your soul
We don’t know when we’re licked,
But we turn lead into gold
We know alchemy, we bring you rock and roll

We are the ones you love, or we’re the ones you hate
We are the ones always too early or too late
We are the first and we just still might be the last
We are Motorhead – born to kick your ass

We bring the firestorm to brighten up your life
We mend all broken hearts, we cure all pain
We bring you attitude and razor teeth to bite
We bring machine gun law and we’re the ones to blame

We are the ones you need, the ones that you despise
We are the ones who wanna poke you in the eye
We are the future, baby, used to be the past
We are Motorhead and we don’t have no class…

We bring you UFOs, saucers in the sky
We shoot you full of noise, we aim to kill
We burn like motherfuckers, spit right in your eye
We fight authority, we glorify free will

We are the ones you heard of, but you never heard
We are electric prophets, here to twist the world
We are the flame at night, the fire in the trash
We are motorhead, we are motorhead
We are motorhead, we are motorhead
We are motorhead, we are motorhead
